We asked white hackers what this phenomenon is and why it can be dangerous.
«This is a mail bomber,» says HackYouMom founder Mykyta Knysh. Ukrainian hacktivist Sean Townsend explains that perhaps someone was retaliating by signing up dev.ua journalists to mailing lists, just to clog up their mail.
«I haven’t seen anything like this in a long time, and it used to be a popular 'entertainment',» Townsend emphasizes.
Knysh explains how this type of spam attack works. The auto-registrar runs through sites and signs the journalist’s email with everything possible.
«We forgot about the FSB so much: you take xrumer, load a database of 10 million forums and sites, and it registers everywhere, indicating the FSB mail as its own, and 10 million forums write messages to the FSB mail like „Come on, you registered on the ABC forum“,» recalls an interesting case Knysh.
Mykyta Knysh emphasizes that this spam attack may go hand in hand with more serious hacks.
«When they hack your email, they send such spam that you get tired of reading and don’t find the email from Google that your password has been changed,» adds the white hat hacker.
