Garmin’s autopilot system took control of the aircraft, which had lost cabin pressure, and completely independently performed an emergency landing in Autoland mode.

As Futurism reports, this happened on a twin-engine turboprop Beechcraft Super King Air during a flight in Colorado. Garmin’s emergency auto-landing system took control of the plane, contacted air traffic controllers and made a smooth landing at Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport near Denver.

«This was the first time the Autoland system was used from start to finish in a real emergency,» Garmin said.

The system is part of a new line of auto-landing systems designed exclusively for emergency use, and is designed, according to the manufacturer, to «provide full flight control for the purpose of landing the aircraft» in situations «when the pilot is unable to fly the aircraft.» The real-world application of the system to save lives is a significant achievement for the aviation industry.

Garmin’s Autoland system was automatically activated because «the cabin altitude exceeded established safe levels» after the plane suffered a «rapid, uncontrolled loss of pressure,» said the CEO of Buffalo River Aviation. The pilots donned oxygen masks and then «made the decision to leave the system on,» he added.

The autonomous system independently selected a landing site based on criteria such as distance and runway length, and notified the control center of its intention.

«Although the system was operating as intended, the pilots were prepared to regain manual control of the aircraft in the event of any system failure,» Buffalo River Aviation said. The pilots «consciously decided to preserve and utilize all available resources and minimize additional variables in an unforeseen, emergency situation.»
