According to Hinton, the rapid adoption of AI will be completely different from the technological revolutions of the past that created new classes of jobs. This is reported by Futurism.
«People who lose their jobs will have no other jobs to go to. If AI becomes as smart as humans — or smarter — any job they can do, AI can do. These people are really betting that AI will replace a lot of workers,» the scientist said.
Hinton pioneered the development of deep learning methods, which are the basis of generative AI models that are driving today’s AI boom. For his work in neural networks, he received the 2018 Turing Award, along with University of Montreal researcher Yoshua Bengio and former Meta AI chief scientist Yann LeCun. The trio is considered the «godfathers» of artificial intelligence.
All three scientists have been outspoken, to varying degrees, about the risks of the technology. But it was Hinton who first drew the most attention when he said he regretted his life’s work. He has repeatedly warned that artificial intelligence will destroy jobs and cause mass unemployment.
He said the AI industry will not be profitable without replacing human labor. He added that the multibillionaires who lead AI companies, such as Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg and Larry Ellison, have not really «thought through» the fact that «if workers don’t get paid, no one will buy their products.»
Hinton believes that AI machines could be a great tool for waging war. He pointed out that using AI robots to fight wars abroad would be a great solution for the US military-industrial complex, as there would be no dead soldiers to cause a «political backlash.»
«I think this will remove one of the main obstacles to rich and powerful countries simply invading small countries like Grenada,» said the «godfather» of AI.
Recall that last week, another «father», Yann LeCun, decided to leave Meta to start a new project in the field of AI. He does not like the current development of the technology and believes that it is impossible to achieve the level of AGI in this form.
