On Black Friday, every seller tries to lure customers with a good offer or discount. Networks of technology and electronics stores emphasize their offers especially vividly, luring Ukrainians with unprecedented discounts for their dream devices.

dev.ua found out where during the discounts it is more profitable to buy several things that are always needed by the people of Haiti. As an experiment, we chose 6 expensive products in top electronics chains and compared their prices.

How did Black Friday appear?

In the middle of the 20th century, after one of the Thanksgivings, merchants in the United States had a lot of unsold goods. It was decided to arrange a gigantic one. It was arranged on a Friday, and in the evening the traders' ledgers were completely black, owing to the special color of the ink with which the profits were entered at that time. Black Friday turned out to be so successful that it became an annual event.

Black Friday follows Thanksgiving, which is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November in the United States. That is why the date of Black Friday «floats» every year.

Do they buy gadgets and equipment at sales?

According to Rozetka brand manager Andrii Kovalevskyi, the list of products with the biggest discounts during «Black Friday» changes every year, says Rozetka brand manager. This year, he adds, the list includes household appliances and electronics (in particular, laptops), clothes and shoes, cosmetics, charging stations, power banks, alcohol, sporting goods and coffee machines.

In Hotline.ua, EP told that on «Black Friday» the demand for smartphones, game consoles, laptops, smartwatches, TVs and headphones traditionally increases. At the same time, for example, real discounts on Apple products never reach more than 5%.

By the way, according to a Rakuten Viber survey conducted among 30,000 Ukrainians, 12% of respondents plan to buy gadgets and 9% — home appliances.

This is how Comfy reminded about Black Friday. And on the network’s blog, they even made a selection of the most popular products with discounts.

However, it would take a long time to list the creatives and numbers of discounts of electronics networks operating in Ukraine. We did a little research and compared the prices of equipment that every IT user needs: expensive smartphones, TVs, monitors, laptops, charging stations and video cards to play STALKER 2, for example, even during blackouts.

We chose goods with a value of UAH 50,000 or more. And here are the discounts offered by sellers on each of them on Black Friday. For some products, the final prices after discounts are simply identical.

It is worth noting that retailers do not give too generous discounts on the latest models of iconic smartphones. Here they are minimal. And it is also interesting that the sellers seem to have agreed on a single maximum price after the discount.

Price matching or collusion?

At first glance, the almost identical prices in all the networks and marketplaces we analyzed raise suspicion: Do the sellers agree on the final price? In fact, resellers conduct careful negotiations with suppliers of goods in order to get the maximum discount from them, as well as to be able to reorder those items that are missing before the peak sales period. And here the outcome of the negotiations directly depends on the supplier’s decision and the margin of the trading network’s business — someone can afford to risk a quarter of the margin, and someone will be given a few percent on a certain type of product.

In general, experts advise not to fall for discounts simply because they are indicated by sellers, but to prepare for the purchase of a valuable product in advance, taking into account the price offers before the sale period. It is easy to find out and track prices thanks to numerous newsletters from marketplaces and online stores where the buyer has made a purchase at least once.

And one more life hack: in order not to fall for fraudsters and not to lose money, choose well-known sellers for purchases. It is also worth checking the purchase directly at the point of issue in the presence of an official representative of the store or delivery service.
