The technology is currently being tested at one of four At-home Cafes in Tokyo, staffed by waitresses dressed in maid costumes who provide playful and personalized service. The test run will last until the end of March.
According to the South China Morning Post, the network has teamed up with a technology company to install AI-powered translation screens.
Earlier this year, an At-home Cafe in Tokyo began using VUEVO Display screens with artificial intelligence, which support over 100 languages. The panel translates staff words in real time and vice versa.
The screen rental fee is reportedly 900,000 yen ($6,000) per year.
The CEO of the cafe chain says that 10 to 15% of customers are foreigners. And although the staff knows English, many tourists still don’t.
The translation service was positively received by foreign tourists.
