As part of the Nightfall project, the UK has launched a competition to rapidly develop ballistic missiles for Ukraine. The new weapons will have a range of over 500 km and will be able to operate effectively in conditions of intense electronic warfare.
The Nightfall missiles will be able to be launched from a variety of vehicles and will have 200-kilogram high-explosive warheads, the British government said .
They plan to produce up to 10 units per month, and their cost will be 800,000 pounds per missile.
"This will provide Ukraine with an effective tool for deep strikes that will not depend on the strict export controls of other states," the report noted.
The project will select three teams, each awarded a £9m development contract, to design, develop and deliver the first three missiles for weapons testing within 12 months.
"A strong Ukraine is essential for Europe's security. Britain's new long-range missiles will help Ukrainians survive in battle and pose a serious new challenge to Putin. In 2026, our alliance with Ukraine remains unwavering. We are providing them with the weapons to fight now, laying the foundation for future peace," the government added.
Although the Nightfall project is aimed at supporting Ukraine, it will also become the basis for future programs of the UK Armed Forces in the field of developing long-range attack systems.
