Hackers are attacking users of BTCPay Server, a service for accepting payments in Bitcoin. They are already stealing their cryptocurrency. Owners of outdated versions of the program are at risk. The developers have urged users to temporarily stop working on BTCPay Server until the investigation is complete.
Currently, attacks are known against BTCPay Server version 2.4.1, released in July 2026, and older versions.
BTCPay Server allows companies and entrepreneurs to accept payments in Bitcoin without banks or other intermediaries. The service is free, so users can install it on their own servers and manage their funds independently.
These servers were the targets of hackers. According to BTCPay Server co-founder Nicolas Dorier, the attackers managed to gain administrator rights, which means they actually had full control over the attacked servers. The team is still investigating how they did it.
Hackers withdraw money from “hot wallets” — crypto wallets that are constantly connected to the internet. They are convenient to use for everyday payments, but their connection to the network can make them vulnerable to attacks.
Therefore, the BTCPay Server team has urged server owners to temporarily shut down their servers using the ./btcpay-down.sh command while the investigation continues. Users are also advised to update the program to the latest version.
It is currently unknown how many people were affected by the attack and how many bitcoins were stolen.
Previously, dev.ua wrote that hackers stole almost $352 million from the crypto wallets of the Bitget exchange. At that time, the attackers also attacked hot wallets, so the exchange was forced to temporarily suspend withdrawals.
