According to the BBC, Mark Zuckerberg has been building the Koolau Ranch complex (over 1,400 acres) in Hawaii since 2014, with shelter, autonomous food and energy supply. There are reports of underground spaces and large roads that hide the complex. Zuckerberg denies that it is a bunker, calling it «a simple shelter, like a basement.»
Reed Hoffman, co-founder of LinkedIn, talks about «apocalypse insurance» — a concept in which people buy real estate in safe places (like New Zealand) in case of global upheaval.
Ilya Sutzkever, one of the co-founders of OpenAI, believes that the development of AGI (artificial general intelligence) could be coming soon, according to journalists. He allegedly proposed building an underground shelter for the company’s top scientists before AGI goes public.
During one of the meetings, he allegedly said, «We’ll definitely build a bunker before we release AGI into the world.» This comment perfectly illustrates the paradox: those who create superintelligent machines are also the ones who fear them the most.
Such actions are easy to understand.
Is AGI close?
First, with the advancement of artificial intelligence, the growing threats from geopolitics and climate change, many feel that the world has become less predictable.
Second, technophobes are talking about the possibility of «powerful AI» in the coming years. This raises questions about security and scenarios where the technology becomes significantly more powerful.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said in December 2024 that AGI «will be here sooner than most people think.» DeepMind co-founder Demis Hassabis predicts it will be there in 5–10 years. Anthropic founder Dario Amodei wrote that «powerful AI» could be here as early as 2026.
Professor at the University of SouthamptonWendy Hall is skeptical: «The scientific community recognizes that the technology is amazing, but it is still very far from human intelligence.»
Cognizant CTO Babak Hojat adds that AGI requires «fundamental breakthroughs» that don’t exist yet.
Third, the guys working on AI — whether they’re startups or big business — are often the first to see potential threats. They start stocking up on resources and considering worst-case scenarios.
The idea has attracted Silicon Valley’s attention because AGI is seen as a step toward an even more powerful technology—AI (Artificial Super Intelligence), a superintelligence that surpasses humans. As early as 1958, mathematician John von Neumann described a point in time when artificial intelligence would surpass human understanding—a phenomenon later called the singularity. In Genesis (2024), authors Eric Schmidt, Craig Mundy, and Henry Kissinger write that it is only a matter of time before technology becomes so efficient that humans will simply hand over control.
AGI proponents believe it will cure deadly diseases, stop the climate crisis, and create an endless source of clean energy. Elon Musk believes that superintelligent AI could bring about an era of «universal high income.»

But there is a dark side: what if such a system decides that humanity is the main problem on the planet?
