Sony announced its decision to withdraw from Russia shortly after the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The company attempted to close its business in 2023, and after a failed attempt, re-filed liquidation documents with the Federal Tax Service in October 2024.
In 2024, the company began closing its branded stores in Russia, completing this process by the summer due to lack of product supply. In recent years, Sony in Russia has mainly sold remaining inventory and provided device maintenance services.
Sony Pictures Entertainment also stopped releasing films in Russia, and Sony Music ceased operations in September 2022, removing foreign catalogs from local streaming services and spinning off its Russian division into an independent label.
In March 2022, the corporation stopped supplying consoles, suspended the PlayStation Store, and donated $2 million to aid Ukrainians affected by the war through the UN and Save the Children.
Players from the Russian Federation have repeatedly complained about the blocking of PlayStation Network accounts they created in other regions to circumvent Sony’s sanctions imposed due to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
In 2024, Sony released its first game with official Ukrainian localization — the 3D action platformer Astro Bot.
