Canva announced the acquisition of 2D animation startup Cavalry and Mango AI, which improves advertising performance.
As TechCrunch reports, British company Cavalry specializes in 2D animation for various industries such as advertising, marketing, games, and generative art. Its tools are expected to complement Canva’s existing professional suite of photo editing, vector graphics, and layout software, Affinity.
«By combining Cavalry with Affinity, we are filling this gap [in video editing] and opening up a complete professional suite that covers photo editing, vector images, layouts, and now video. Together, these tools form the foundation of a full-featured Creative OS for professional work, while maintaining the depth and control that professional creatives rely on,» the company noted in its blog.
In addition to Cavalry, Canva also acquired MangoAI, a startup that worked on building reinforcement learning systems to improve the performance of video ads. Canva said the startup’s first product helped customers create and run ads, as well as monitor results to improve future campaigns.
MangoAI was founded by Nirmal Govind, former VP of Data Science and Engineering at Netflix, and Vineet Misra, former data scientist at Netflix and Roblox. Canva said Govind will become Canva’s first «Chief Algorithm Officer», while Misra will work to improve Canva’s marketing products.
Recall that last year, Morgan Stanley lowered its target price on Adobe shares because its main competitors, including graphic design platforms Figma and Canva, attracted «tens and hundreds of millions of monthly users» thanks to the integration of AI agents and the capabilities they promise.
