ChatGPT communications are not confidential information, Altman says. Therefore, OpenAI can disclose the correspondence upon court request.

Altman stated this in a recent podcast by Theo Vaughn, writes Windows Report.

Users often discuss very sensitive topics with ChatGPT, almost like a life coach or therapist. But unlike real therapists, there are no legal guarantees regarding such conversations.

“If you discuss relationship issues or mental health issues with ChatGPT and a lawsuit arises, we may be forced to provide that information,” Altman said, citing a loophole in the law regarding interactions with artificial intelligence.

He also added that even deleted chat history by users can be retrieved in cases related to security or legal procedures.

As reliance on AI grows, especially for emotional advice, Altman believes new legislation will be necessary to protect user privacy. In the meantime, experts advise viewing AI as an auxiliary tool, not one that should replace professional services.
