OpenAI previously added a feature called «Memory,» which allowed it to store a limited amount of information and use it for future responses. Users often had to specifically ask ChatGPT to remember something to trigger this feature, although it sometimes tried to guess what it was supposed to remember, ArsTechica points out.
When saved, a note would appear in a ChatGPT conversation, and users could toggle the feature on or off as they wished. It would automatically be disabled for certain chats where users selected the «Temporary Chat» option — something like ChatGPT’s incognito mode.
Now, where there used to be a checkbox in the ChatGPT interface to enable or disable memory tracking, there are now two options: «Keep Memory» is the old memory feature, which is essentially a limited repository of important facts. The new feature, «Reference Chat History,» allows ChatGPT to use all previous conversations as context and tailor future responses accordingly.
This means that over time, ChatGPT learns more about the user to personalize its responses, not just a few key facts. Unlike the old saved memories feature, the information saved with the chat history memory feature is not accessible or customizable. It is either enabled or not.
The new memory feature is already rolling out to users of paid ChatGPT Plus and Pro subscriptions. When you gain access, a pop-up «Introducing new, improved memory» appears in the chat. Some countries and regions (United Kingdom, European Union, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland) are not yet included in the list where the improved memory will work.
OpenAI said that these new features will be available to Enterprise, Team, and Edu users at a later date, and did not specify when users of the free version of ChatGPT will receive them.
It was previously reported that in just three months of 2025, the number of paid users of ChatGPT exceeded 20 million, which is almost 30% more than the 15.5 million at the end of last year. According to estimates, ChatGPT currently generates at least $415 million in monthly revenue, which is $5 billion in annualized terms.
