This feature allows users to interact with each other and ChatGPT in a single shared conversation. OpenAI claims that this release transforms ChatGPT from an individual assistant to a platform where friends, family, or employees can work together on planning, content creation, and decision-making, writes TechCrunch.
In group chats, users will be able to, for example, jointly coordinate trips, create documents, resolve disputes, or conduct collective research, while ChatGPT helps search, summarize, and compare options.
Up to 20 people can participate in a group chat if they accept the invitation. The company notes that personal settings and memory remain private for each user.
To start a group chat, users need to tap the people icon and add participants — either directly or by sharing a link. Everyone will be asked to create a short profile with a name, nickname, and photo.
Adding someone to an existing chat creates a new conversation, leaving the original chat unchanged.
ChatGPT knows when to intervene and when to remain silent in a group conversation, the company says. Users can tag ChatGPT to make it respond. ChatGPT can also respond to messages with emojis and link to profile photos.
