The Shevchenkivskyi District Court of Chernivtsi is considering the case of a KPI student who, having created his own malicious software, hacked into Netflix users' accounts. The student-IT student sold the accesses on Telegram.
According to the investigation materials, the suspect, a 2nd year student of the Faculty of Informatics and Computer Engineering of Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, created a malicious script «HackTools», which allowed to obtain logins and passwords of Netflix users. Using his own MacBook M1 Pro and an Internet connection, he gained access to more than 40 accounts, including personal data of users.
To distribute «restricted access data,» the student used his own chatbot on Telegram, through which he resold accounts for UAH 2,000. According to the conclusion of the computer technical examination, the script contained signs of hacking utilities capable of automatically checking the validity of logins and passwords, which theoretically allows unauthorized interference in the operation of automated systems.
The court refused to detain him, in particular considering that the suspect was young, had a permanent place of residence, was caring for a disabled person of the second group, had no previous convictions and had a positive character. The court found that a more lenient preventive measure was sufficient to prevent the risks of absconding or influencing witnesses.
The decision takes effect immediately and can be appealed within five days. Sanctions for hacker attacks on automated systems are provided for in Articles 361, 361-1 and 361-2 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine and can reach up to 15 years of imprisonment.
