This was told to the BBC by a man under the pseudonym Eric from Hong Kong.
The video reportedly captured the couple entering a hotel room, unpacking their suitcases and then having sex — and thousands of people were able to view it on a voyeurism website.
The man explained that he was viewing a pornographic website with videos filmed with a hidden camera, which he had visited since his teens, when he suddenly realized that he himself had become the hero of one of the videos.
He said he started watching such content because he was attracted to the "authenticity" of what was happening: "What really struck me was that people don't know about the filming. To me, traditional porn looks too staged and fake."
The production and distribution of pornography is illegal in China, forcing residents to turn to services like Telegram, which allows them to access sites and apps with explicit content, including so-called "hidden camera porn."
According to Eric, who is now in his 30s, he and his partner, called Emily, were recorded without their consent while staying at a hotel in Shenzhen, southern China, in 2023.
The government introduced new measures to try to quell the hidden camera epidemic last April, ordering hotel owners to regularly check their premises for recording devices, but it appears the spy camera scandal is far from over.
Eric explained that he found a video edited into an hour-long video of him and Emily filming themselves three weeks after their stay at the hotel, before he broke the news to his partner.
At first she thought he was joking, until she saw it with her own eyes. It scared her to death: the girl realized with horror that her friends, family, or colleagues could have seen it too.
The pair didn't speak to each other for weeks after Eric made the discovery, and are said to now wear hats in public to avoid being recognized, while staying as far away from hotels as possible.
The BBC reports the existence of thousands of secretly filmed videos. During the inspection of six resources, 180 cameras were found broadcasting in real time what was happening in the country's hotels.
The attackers are attracting an audience through Telegram channels by offering paid subscriptions. The cost of access to private broadcasts is about 450 yuan per month (that's over $65).
The BBC claims that these hidden cameras — no bigger than the eraser on a pencil — are usually activated as soon as guests insert their key cards.
When one of the recordings from a popular hotel room was interrupted, viewers rushed to the Telegram channel to express their displeasure. The agent behind it reportedly replied: "What a shame; this room had the best sound quality!"
He also boasted about the “amazing speed” of the live-streaming platform. These agents are said to work for “camera owners” — presumably the same people who place hidden devices in hotel rooms.
In response to the allegations, Telegram told the BBC: “The distribution of pornography without consent is expressly prohibited by Telegram’s terms of service.” The company also added that the service “proactively moderates and accepts complaints [of inappropriate content] to remove millions of pieces of harmful content every day.”
