«We’re trying to be modern and all that, but I don’t like it because we’re trying to hire very elite professionals, and I think if we use artificial intelligence, we’ll just start checking boxes,» Calkins told Business Insider.
He fears that if Appian relies on artificial intelligence for recruiting, they could lose a potentially special candidate.
«We had to be better than that. We had to see the magic in people when we read their resumes, and that didn’t require artificial intelligence to check if you did well in school or anything like that,» he said.
The Appian CEO said it’s not just recruiting that companies are losing out on. He pointed to an MIT study that found that 95% of companies have yet to see a return on their investment in generative AI. Calkins said it’s incredible to see «the technology of the century» being used so poorly.
«This is because we don’t know how to actually use AI. It’s not that difficult, you just need to connect AI to real work. Instead of using it for minor tasks, you need to connect it to big tasks,» he believes.
He believes that AI could be used much more effectively to solve the huge challenges facing large companies. One of those challenges, he says, is that corporations are «inundated» with all kinds of messages every day.
«Most corporations receive millions of messages. Some of them are on paper, some on faxes, some in emails, some in text messages, and some in conversations that are recorded. And they are about different topics, right?» noted the CEO of Appian.
Earlier, the Ukrainian State Employment Service launched an AI-based digital assistant. It has a high level of confidentiality — the resume is automatically deleted from the system immediately after the selection of vacancies.
