The term vibe coding was coined in early 2025 by OpenAI co-founder Andrey Karpaty. It quickly became the accepted name for a new approach to writing programs using AI tools, and was even named the word of the year by Collins online dictionary.
However, Boris Cherny, who previously stated that the software engineer profession could disappear as early as 2026 , is convinced that it is time for a new term. In his opinion, products from Anthropic and OpenAI create millions of lines of useful code and bring huge revenues to companies, so the word "vibe" sounds too frivolous in this context.
In search of an alternative, Cherny turned to the Claude chatbot for help. The AI suggested “agentic engineering” — another phrase coined by Karpaty . However, the developer found it insufficiently apt. Currently, the company’s official documentation calls Claude Code simply an “AI programming assistant” and an “agent tool.”
Now, the head of Claude Code is looking for fresh ideas among users. He encouraged them to send him suggestions on the X social network and promised to start using the best option.
The announcements came during the company's morning presentation at the Code with Claude conference. In addition to discussing terminology, Anthropic announced a major infrastructure upgrade — expanding its computing power thanks to a new deal with Elon Musk's SpaceX .
