BlueBird co-founder tells how Chinese New Year repeatedly thwarts plans for drone production in Ukraine

Co-founder of the miltech company BlueBird Tech, Valery Zarubin, shared details of how Ukrainian manufacturers cooperate with China, and what «pitfalls» there are in this process.

As he explained in an interview with Vector, one of the constant destabilizing factors is the long celebration of Chinese New Year.

«Here comes the destabilizer of Ukrainian miltech production — the Chinese New Year. They celebrate it all February, want to completely close all contracts by the holiday, and at this time they do not produce anything at all. It is important to close all issues with Chinese manufacturers by the end of January, because the new cycle of their work will begin only in March,» he shared.

According to Valery Zarubin, depending on the queue, Chinese manufacturers usually produce ordered components for 1–3 months.

«The next step is delivery: if these are large items, like batteries, it will be by ship, because air is many times more expensive. And that’s another three months. So the entire cycle from ordering to manufacturers receiving components can take six months,» said the co-founder of BlueBird Tech.

In addition, another problem of cooperation with China regarding ordering components is that Chinese manufacturers do not directly cooperate with Ukrainian companies.

«Another problem is that Chinese manufacturers are prohibited by law from cooperating with Ukraine. So all transactions and interactions with the Chinese market take place through third parties, for example, companies from the USA and Europe. They also have an operational load, pay salaries to employees, pay taxes. And, in addition to these additional costs, interaction through third companies also takes time,» the entrepreneur noted.

Recall that previously dev.ua published an extensive interview with the co-founder of the Blue Bird company, which produces Chuyka drone detectors and Grets electronic warfare systems.
