CyberLegion hackers hacked a Russian bot farm and caused losses of over $1 million

Hacktivists took full control of about 300 accounts and pages with over 500,000 followers.

Cyber group CyberLegion has discovered and hacked one of the Russian bot farms, which has been engaged in disinformation, zombification and manipulation of public opinion in various countries around the world for a long time. According to preliminary estimates by hacktivists, the amount of damage caused by the loss of the bot farm and its influence reaches over $1 million.

According to CyberLegion, the bot farm employees registered accounts on SIM cards purchased in Ukraine, the Russian Federation, Moldova, as well as in European and African countries. They used proxy servers and fake accounts to disguise themselves. The profiles were centrally managed through the anti-detection browser Octo Browser.

The bot farm systematically spread pro-Putin destructive narratives. In particular, the focus was on discrediting Ukraine and inciting distrust and chaos in other states, CyberLegion notes.

During the investigation, the “good hackers” discovered a coordination center of the attackers in the Moscow region and identified its managers. As evidence, the hacktivists published Octo Browser configurations and screenshots confirming the methods of operation of the pro-Putin bot farm.

On the pages taken under CyberLegion's control, subscribers "saw the truth for the first time," the hacktivists note.
