According to the company’s press service, Daybreak is expanding the scope of AI giants into the cybersecurity industry.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman called the initiative an effort to accelerate cybersecurity on social media X. «AI is already good at cybersecurity and will soon become incredibly effective at it. We want to start working with as many companies as possible now to help them stay secure,» he said.
Daybreak combines the latest models from OpenAI and Codex in an agent-based toolkit. This allows teams to automate codebase analysis, uncover hidden vulnerabilities, verify patches, and analyze unknown systems much faster than traditional static analyzers. The main goal of the project is to minimize the time between detecting a bug and fully fixing it.
Daybreak’s emergence comes in response to the rapid development of its competitors. In particular, researchers have seen a surge in AI-based cyberattacks since the release of the Claude Mythos model last month. Mozilla, the maker of the Firefox browser, said that it used Mythos to uncover 271 previously unknown vulnerabilities in its product. Against this backdrop, OpenAI is trying to outpace Anthropic in the race for corporate customers.
Despite the benefits for defenders, the company acknowledges the risks: similar technologies could be used by hacking groups to create automated exploits. Google researchers recently confirmed that large language models are becoming increasingly good at exploiting vulnerabilities that traditional scanners often miss. That’s why OpenAI emphasizes working with government agencies before fully deploying the models.
The deployment of systems with enhanced cyber capabilities will occur iteratively throughout 2026. OpenAI previously introduced GPT-5.4-Cyber, a modification of its latest flagship model specifically tuned for work in the field of defensive cybersecurity.
