The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the Decree of President Volodymyr Zelensky on the emergence of a new professional holiday — Programmer’s Day. When will it be celebrated?
Previously, the Ministry of Digital Transformation noted that Programmer’s Day is needed to recognize «the important role of specialists in the field of information technology in the development of the digital economy, innovation, science, and education of Ukraine, as well as to increase the prestige of the programming profession in society.»
«Establishing a professional holiday, Programmer’s Day, will contribute to the popularization of IT specialties, support for young specialists, development of human resources in the field of information technologies, and enhancement of Ukraine’s image as a modern technological state,» the Ministry of Digital Affairs believes.

Now Programmer’s Day in Ukraine will be officially celebrated every year on January 7.
«Given the significant contribution of information technology specialists to the development of the digital economy and digital security of the state, which plays an important role in strengthening the national security and defense capabilities of Ukraine, as well as the development of the IT industry: to establish a professional holiday in Ukraine — Programmer’s Day, to be celebrated on January 7,» the presidential decree states.
Previously, Ukrainian IT professionals celebrated Programmer’s Day. Ukrainian IT professionals celebrated Programmer’s Day every 256th day of the year, but this tradition has Russian roots. It was proposed in 2002 by Parallel Technologies employees Valentin Balt and Mikhail Chervyakov, who were trying to collect signatures for a petition to the Russian government asking them to recognize this day as the official Programmer’s Day. In 2011, the Russian authorities made it an official holiday.
