Polish GOG hired a private detective to save an ancient game in its catalog
Marcin Paczynski, senior business development manager at digital video game service GOG, said that the process of preserving old games can be so complicated that he could write an entire book about it.
Marcin Paczynski, senior business development manager at digital video game service GOG, said that the process of preserving old games can be so complicated that he could write an entire book about it.
One interesting story that could make it into such a book involved a man in the UK who unknowingly inherited the rights to several games but was «nowhere to be found», PC Gamer reports.
«He kind of disappeared from the radar, so we hired someone in the UK to find him. This was the type of person who really lived without a cell phone, without any internet presence, just relaxing. He didn’t even know he owned the rights because it was just a package with his legacy… We have a lot of stories like that», Paczynski said.
Online video game store GOG, owned by The Witcher and Cyberpunk 2077 developers CD Projekt, announcedthe GOG Preservation Program last year. The program allocates additional resources to ensure that a selection of older games, such as the original Diablo or the first Resident Evil, work well on a variety of current and future devices.
Marcin Paczynski also mentioned a Vietnam veteran who became a game developer and turned into a business magnate behind a multi-million dollar oil company, as well as more stories about developers whose physical documentation of intellectual property ownership was destroyed in a fire.
Recall that earlier, Ukrainian studio GSC Game World announced the official release of a large-scale modification of STALKER Anomaly on the GOG digital video game store from Polish studio CD Project. Anomaly was included in the curated list of the best mods and is installed in «one click».
