A Ukrainian developer created Vitamin Helper for smart vitamin intake: the application has an AI assistant, a composition scanner, and analysis decoding

React Native developer Yaroslav Pisotsky created the Vitamin Helper app — a personal AI assistant that simplifies and streamlines the intake of vitamins and biologically active supplements. The app not only helps select the right complexes based on tests or symptoms, but also analyzes the compatibility of trace elements and adjusts notifications to the user's meal schedule.

How the idea came about

The impetus for the development was the personal experience of an IT professional who was faced with the lack of effect from taking popular supplements on his own.

“Usually the best idea is a solution to a problem, so for my app I decided to take a frequent problem that I personally encountered. You take general tests, see that you don’t have enough vitamin D, you drink it, but there is no effect. Then one of your friends says that you should actually drink it with K2, and it’s better to add Omega. You add these vitamins, and it helps, but the thought remains: “How was I supposed to know this myself?”” — says Yaroslav Pisotsky on LinkedIn.

The desire to remove uncertainty and provide people with simple explanations when choosing vitamin complexes was the main motivation for creating the application.

What problem does Vitamin Helper solve and the role of the AI assistant?

The main goal of Vitamin Helper is to close the knowledge gaps about vitamin absorption and simplify routine processes. The application solves the problem of incorrect combination of elements. For example, it warns against simultaneous intake of magnesium with iron or calcium with zinc, and helps to decipher medical documents.

The application integrates an AI assistant that acts as a personal consultant: the user can simply upload a photo or PDF with the results of laboratory tests or describe their well-being in words, and artificial intelligence will recognize deficiencies and select the appropriate course.

“My idea was to make the path as simple and intuitive as possible for the user. The application has several branches of the questionnaire so as not to ask unnecessary questions, and immediately after it can create a vitamin course for you based on a PDF with the results of the tests or just a description of the problem. If you want to learn more or ask additional questions, the application has an AI assistant. It will help with all questions related to vitamins, generate an intake plan, and you will only have to add it to your diet with one button,” the developer notes.

How the app works

The application's functionality is built around several convenient modules.

  • Knowledge Base and Compatibility: Contains a detailed guide to over 50 vitamins and minerals. When adding a new supplement, the integrated engine checks it for interactions with other elements and suggests optimal accompanying vitamins.

  • Label scanner: allows you to capture the contents of a jar on camera and instantly receive information about dosage and quality.

  • Smart intake tracker: takes into account the specific requirements for each supplement (before, during or after meals). The user only needs to specify the time of their breakfast, lunch and dinner once, after which the algorithm automatically calculates the time of notifications.

  • Analytics: displays weekly progress and regularity of intake.

The application works offline in tracker mode, does not contain advertising, and has full Ukrainian localization.

“I hope that Vitamin Helper will be useful not only to me and will help people feel a little better in these difficult conditions in which we are currently living in Ukraine,” Yaroslav concludes.
