Launch of Patriot missile production in Ukraine will take years — Bloomberg

US President Donald Trump’s promised authorization to start production of Patriot missile interceptors in Ukraine is unlikely to yield quick results. Creating ultra-sophisticated defense lines in a country under fire risks being delayed for years due to technological, security and logistical challenges.

Donald Trump, during a meeting with Volodymyr Zelensky on the sidelines of the NATO summit taking place in Ankara, Turkey, stated that the United States plans to grant Ukraine an official license to independently produce interceptor missiles for Patriot anti-aircraft missile systems.

As Bloomberg reports, the main obstacle to a quick launch is the uniqueness of the PAC-3 missiles. This is one of the most secretive defense developments in the world, currently produced in only two countries — the USA and Japan, and the cost of one unit capable of shooting down ballistic targets is about $5 million. Because of this, production even on established lines takes years.

«Ukrainian production of these missiles will not take place in the short time frame required. In addition, Ukraine’s ability to quickly scale up production of drones and its own missiles may not extend to Patriot due to strict US technological controls,» Bloomberg believes.

In addition to tight export controls, a major challenge is already overstretched global supply chains. Lockheed Martin, for example, has previously said it will take until 2030 to triple its production capacity.

The most complex elements to reproduce are the high-power solid-fuel engines, maneuvering steering micromotors and the homing head, which is manufactured by Boeing Co. for the American and Japanese Patriots.

Another critical factor that will delay the appearance of Ukrainian-made PAC-3 missiles is security. Any large defense plant in Ukraine would become a priority target for Russian attacks. William Alberke, a senior fellow at the Pacific Forum, believes that launching lines on Ukrainian territory is currently impossible.

«If it were up to me, I would suggest that the Ukrainians build a plant in Poland. Otherwise, it will become the main target of attack. They will never be able to build it,» the specialist emphasized. Especially since the Polish government has already signed an agreement to service European PAC-3 missiles on its territory.

Before Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022, Ukraine had a developed defense-industrial complex capable of building Soviet-style aircraft and missiles. Currently, domestic companies such as Fire Point are focusing on long-range strike drones and cheaper means of destruction.

It was previously reported that Ukrainian defense technology developer Fire Point is preparing to launch production of its new FP-7.X anti-missile interceptors in August this year. The development is intended to become a mass and much cheaper alternative to Western air defense systems in the fight against Russian ballistic missiles and drones.
