A tech enthusiast named Tsuto built a home server using SSDs, HDDs, and other components he found in an e-waste bin at a local dump. He now visits the site about once a week. Among the finds have already been graphics cards, RAM, and even a working Asus ROG gaming laptop.
According to him, much of the equipment is quite old, but among the electronic junk there are SSDs, hard drives, video cards, RAM and entire computers. "It's crazy that people throw this away now," he noted.
One of his projects was a home server on Proxmox, a platform that allows you to run multiple virtual machines and services on one physical computer. In the server, the enthusiast used: two 256 GB SSDs, which duplicate each other and are used for the system; a 1 TB SSD for fast storage; three 2 TB HDDs for ZFS storage. However, the server was not completely free. The tech enthusiast still purchased the Intel Core i7-7700 and 64 GB of RAM separately.
Another lucky find was an Asus ROG gaming laptop. It only needed a new battery for about $25. Now, Tsuto's son uses the laptop to play light video games.
Previously, dev.ua told how a man bought an Asus Hyper M.2 expansion card at a flea market for only $30 and, when he got home, discovered three 2 TB Samsung 980 Pro SSDs under its radiator.
