The Telegram domain t.me, which stopped working worldwide on the evening of July 13, is available again.
As a reminder, yesterday, there were problems opening Telegram short links in the .me domain zone in browsers around the world. This failure affected only link clicks, while the messenger itself continued to work without interruptions.
Today, Montenegrin company DomainME, which administers the .me top-level domain, announced that the t.me domain has been blocked due to compliance with sanctions from the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC).
On July 13, the US Treasury Department published information on the imposition of sanctions on one of the VPN services, First VPN Service (1VPNS) . Among its several web addresses, the identifier t.me/FirstVPNService was also listed. The administrator of this service, a citizen of Ukraine, Dmytro Rashevsky, was also included in the list.
It is likely that the domain registrar suspended Telegram's entire t.me domain to comply with the new sanctions, rather than limiting itself to a specific web address that links to a Telegram group on the Treasury Department's sanctions list.
Telegram did not officially explain the reasons for the failure. However, during the incident, the messenger automatically switched to the telegram.me domain to generate new links.
