DTEK and Fluence launch one of the largest energy storage systems in Eastern Europe: the facilities will be able to power 600 thousand homes
Ukrainian energy holding DTEK, together with the American company Fluence, has begun commissioning work on a large-scale energy storage system covering six locations with a total capacity of 200 MW. After testing, the system will be able to store up to 400 MWh of electricity, which is enough to provide energy to approximately 600,000 Ukrainian households for two hours.
As reported on the official DTEK website, the facilities are based on Fluence Gridstack technology and consist of 698 battery modules, each with a capacity of 20 to 50 MW. The system is planned to be fully operational in October 2025.
The project was the first large-scale energy launch after the signing of the Economic Partnership Agreement between Ukraine and the United States. According to the contract with NPC Ukrenergo, the system is to provide frequency maintenance and power reserve services, which is critically important during emergency situations in the power system.
Fluence implemented the project completely remotely, which is the first such case in the company’s history. For local service, 20 Ukrainian power engineers were trained at similar facilities in Finland and Germany. In the future, Fluence will support the operation of the facilities online: with diagnostics, monitoring, and technical support in real time.
Ukraine’s energy system continues to adapt to new challenges of wartime. Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) play a key role in balancing the grid, reducing the risk of emergency outages, and integrating renewable energy sources. The demand for such solutions is growing rapidly worldwide, and Ukraine, despite the war, is for the first time participating in the implementation of large-scale projects of this class.
We previously wrote about how IT companies Nova Poshta, DTEK, and Fozzy have gone beyond internal projects and are developing exports. Over the past year, their combined revenue has grown to UAH 7 billion, and some of them are already confidently moving beyond working for their parent company.
