OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said that his company has trained a «new model» that is «very good» at creative writing.
Altman also posted a lengthy sample of the model’s work, following the prompt «Please write a metaphysical literary story about AI and grief,» TechCrunch reported .
«I don’t know yet how and when [this model] will be released, but this is the first time I’ve been truly impressed by something written by artificial intelligence; it so accurately conveyed the atmosphere of metaphysics,» the head of OpenAI shared his impressions.
OpenAI hasn’t previously explored the use of AI in the creation of works of art. The company has mostly focused on predictable fields like math and programming. The fact that it’s experimenting with writing could indicate that its latest generation of models is getting much better at working with text.
Could this model help author George R.R. Martin finish his book The Winds of Winter? George R.R. Martin’s final book in the A Song of Ice and Fire series, A Dance with Dragons, was released in 2011. That same year, HBO debuted the TV series Game of Thrones, based on Martin’s work. But he still hasn’t finished writing The Winds of Winter, the sixth book in the series.
Recently, in an interview with Collider, Martin confirmed that he intends to complete the work.
«I have to finish the books. That’s the only thing I have complete control over. There are no budget constraints. There are no other executives at the studio that I have to please or other writers with different views. The books are what I’m going to make them. And I think the one I’m writing is coming out pretty well, but I wish it would come out faster,» the famous writer said.
However, even when OpenAI releases its AI writer model, it is unlikely that George R.R. Martin will want to use it to speed up the completion of his book. In 2023, several writers, including John Grisham and George R.R. Martin, filed a lawsuit against OpenAI over its ChatGPT chatbot. They believe that the company unknowingly used their writings to train its AI.
