Teenage sisters from Ukraine presented their startup EcoMind in New York, which uses a neural network to sort garbage
Arina Khmelyuk, who, together with her sister Diana, created an AI system for sorting garbage, presented her startup at the World Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge in New York. The idea for EcoMind arose from the stench from a landfill in the Kyiv region.
Arina Khmelyuk, who, together with her sister Diana, created an AI system for sorting garbage, presented her startup at the World Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge in New York. The idea for EcoMind arose from the stench from a landfill in the Kyiv region.
«We now have a prototype of a neural network that is capable of recognizing six types of waste: glass, paper, plastic, food, fabrics, and batteries», — Arina said in an interview with MAN.
According to her, the project was inspired by trips to her grandmother’s in the Kyiv region and the stench in the area of the village of Pidhirtsi. Nearby is a landfill with garbage that is not recycled.
«I couldn’t even imagine that I would find myself in New York and have the opportunity to talk to representatives of giant international companies», — said EcoMind co-founder about her impressions of the World Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge.
The finale of this event took place from November 18 to 21 in New York. It was three days of workshops, meetings with young innovators from around the world and representatives of successful global businesses, as well as a competition for $5,000 to implement your business idea.
According to Khmelyuk, the sisters plan to further train the neural network to recognize more types of garbage and increase its accuracy from 91% to even higher figures.
Recall that earlier, Arina and Diana Khmelyuk told dev.ua that a robotic garbage sorting system will help minimize human labor in harmful conditions.
