Startup ElevenLabs announced the launch of a new service, Eleven Music, which allows companies and ordinary users to create their own music using an artificial intelligence model.
You can generate a track with a simple query like «create a smooth jazz song in the style of the 60s» after which the AI generates a melody with vocals and instrumental accompaniment in just a few minutes.
As the WSJ reports, ElevenLabs is entering the turbulent music generation market, where two AI startups, Suno and Udio, have already faced lawsuits from major music labels for using their intellectual property.
ElevenLabs co-founder and CEO Mati Staniszewski said the three-year-old startup has struck a deal with Merlin Network, a digital rights agency for independent labels, to train its model on the work of artists for whom Merlin represents the rights. ElevenLabs has a similar deal with Kobalt Music Group, an independent music rights management and publishing company. Merlin and Kobalt are still deciding which artists’ music will be used to train ElevenLabs’ music AI model.
The startup also hopes to secure deals with major labels, including Universal Music Group, Sony Music Group and Warner Music Group.
ElevenLabs has also built in safeguards that prevent its model from creating songs with artist names or specific lyrics from albums or labels. It also blocks lyrics that may incite violence, are obscene, or illegal.
Eleven Music is aimed at both businesses and content creators, allowing them to create their own music for commercial projects without having to hire a composer or pay for a limited-use license from a major label. The company has so far provided access to its AI music model to 20 clients, who have used it for film, television, and games, as well as fitness and meditation apps, as well as for their own projects.
Recall that ElevenLabs is an artificial intelligence startup with a valuation of $3.3 billion, whose product was used to dub President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s interview with US blogger Lex Friedman. It previously launched a new standalone Scribe model with support for Ukrainian, which is among the languages with the lowest error rate.
