Estonian Milrem Robotics has adapted its NRCs for Ukraine and is increasing supplies

The developer of robotic platforms told dev.ua how they adapted their THeMIS unmanned ground vehicles for use in the Ukrainian war.

In total, 15 units of these NRCs have already been delivered to Ukraine. Milrem Robotics is actively working to provide the Ukrainian military with a significantly larger number in the near future. This was told to dev.ua by the head of the Milrem Robotics representative office in Ukraine, Mykyta Makushyn.

THeMIS CARGO/CASEVAC became the first NRC on the Ukrainian front line in August 2022. The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine immediately requested 14 more vehicles. This became an excellent example of high-tech ground robotics for Ukrainian companies, whose sector began to grow actively in 2023 and beyond.

The experience of operating the THeMIS UAV in Ukraine is radically different from previous military missions, for example, during Operation Barkhane in Mali. In Mali, it was about fighting insurgents in desert terrain, while in Ukraine it is necessary to work in conditions of dirt, forests and urban areas. Milrem Robotics has made several optimizations for operation in Ukrainian conditions:

  • Extended the remote control range.

  • Conducted "winterization" for work in the cold season.

  • Improved compatibility with environments saturated with electronic warfare (EW) equipment.

Makushyn reported that the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine has sent an official request to receive another 110 CARGO/CASEVAC vehicles in 2024.

Recall that in December 2023, Milrem Robotics signed an agreement with Ukroboronprom to jointly develop NRCs. This partnership is considered very promising, as it allows adapting systems to the specific needs of the Ukrainian army and accelerates the expansion of the innovation base.
