A coding school called Code/Zhytomyr has opened in Zhytomyr, which will operate according to the Estonian educational model. This is the first such project in Ukraine, combining a hybrid learning format with teamwork instead of traditional classes.
As ERR News reports, the first batch already includes about 80 students who have started their studies at the Zhytomyr Polytechnic University. The format assumes the absence of teachers: participants master programming independently and in collaboration with colleagues, following the example of the academy in the Estonian city of Jyväskylä. Such a system, tested in the EU, allows you to quickly train specialists who can integrate into the global IT market.
Code/Zhytomyr is aimed at an adult audience and emphasizes practical skills. The hybrid learning model allows you to continue the educational process even in wartime. Organizers emphasize that the new approach will help people quickly retrain in IT, which is especially important for those who lost their jobs due to the war.
In parallel with the educational project, Estonia has financed another important project in the region, namely the construction of a new bomb shelter for a children’s shelter in Zhytomyr. The shelter is designed for 75 people and is to replace the old basement, which is currently used as a shelter. Completion of the work is scheduled for early 2026.
After the start of the full-scale Russian invasion, Estonia has been actively helping the Zhytomyr region. Among the projects are supporting educational programs, restoring infrastructure, and creating civil defense facilities. The opening of Code/Zhytomyr was the first time that an innovative Estonian model of programming education was introduced in Ukraine. In the future, the school can become an example for other regions and contribute to the training of specialists needed for both civilian industries and the development of the country’s cyber defense.
Previously, dev.ua wrote about how Ukrainians aged 18 and over can undergo intensive peer-to-peer IT training as part of the kood/Zhytomyr program. The project is supported by Estonia as part of digital assistance to Ukraine.
