According to TechCrunch, the new tool has been built into Facebook’s mobile creator interface and connected to its existing Rights Manager technology, which identifies video content matches on Facebook and Instagram. Creators whose videos have been reuploaded in whole or in part without permission will receive a notification with several options: limit the visibility of such Reels on the two platforms, track its statistics and add an attribution with the «original» tag and a link to the creator’s page, or completely abandon the claim.
The feature is primarily aimed at content monetizers. Creators in the Facebook Content Monetization program who meet enhanced originality and integrity requirements, as well as Rights Manager users, are automatically granted access to Facebook Content Protection. Other creators can apply through the professional dashboard or the Facebook for Business site.
For the system to work, the original video must be posted to Facebook directly or via cross-posting from Instagram. The tool then scans the platforms for matches and displays the similarity percentage, number of views, audience, and monetization status of the «mirrored» video. The author can create a «whitelist» of accounts that are allowed to legally use his content to avoid false positives.
If a creator chooses to block, the reach of copies is sharply reduced, but the account that uploaded the video itself does not receive automatic sanctions. Meta explains that this is an attempt to reduce the risk of abuse of the tool against unwanted pages. At the same time, for systematic false complaints, the author himself may lose access to the function.
The new tool complements the company’s previous steps in combating unoriginal content: Meta reported removing approximately 10 million fake profiles masquerading as well-known creators and taking action against hundreds of thousands of accounts with fake interactions.
