Fraudsters are mass-posting AI songs on celebrities' Spotify pages. Ukrainian musicians are also affected by the problem
Attackers are massively hijacking the profiles of famous and little-known musicians and actors on streaming platforms, publishing artificial intelligence-generated content there under the guise of their new releases and appropriating royalties. Ukrainian performers are already facing the consequences of the rampant AI content and failures of verification systems, in particular, singer Andriana-Yaroslava Sayenko, whose author’s track was mistakenly blocked due to suspicion of using AI.
The account hijacking scheme is discussed in the investigation of the publication 404 Media. The author of the article recreated the scammers' algorithm in detail: he generated a punk song on the Udio service, created a cover via ChatGPT and uploaded the file via the digital distributor Distrokid ($3.75 per month). To place a fake track on the official pages of the American rock band Lathe of Heaven, it turned out that it was enough to indicate their name and tick a few boxes in the rights confirmation form. Neither Distrokid nor the streaming platforms Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal and Amazon Music conducted any content rights check.
Within a day, the generated song appeared on the band’s official pages, and royalties from its listening began to flow into the experimenter’s account.
"I just listened to this song. It’s terrible. The fact that you were able to do this is just crazy. The only thing left for small musicians like us is recognition of the results of our work. The fact that someone could ruin our reputation by putting out this terrible garbage under our name is incredibly depressing," Lathe of Heaven vocalist Gage Ellison commented on the situation.
Cases of fake AI-generated songs being published under the names of real authors have become widespread. Musical duo Odette Child discovered more than 300 generated tracks that pretend to be the work of a wide variety of artists — from Taylor Swift to deceased jazz musicians and actors from Broadway musicals. Lesser-known artists or those who have already ceased their active activities remain especially vulnerable to such attacks.
Meanwhile, Deezer says it receives over 100,000 new tracks every day, making it nearly impossible to manually vet each release. And the platform’s attempts to filter out AI content using automated systems often end up hitting real creators.
Ukrainian musician Andriana-Yaroslava Sayenko faced such a problem: distributor TuneCore refused to distribute her track "Praying", mistakenly identifying it as generated by artificial intelligence, although the composition was created entirely manually in the Ableton program.
Spotify notes that accurately detecting generated music remains an unsolved technical problem for the entire industry due to the high probability of false positives in algorithms. The service is currently implementing an “Artist Profile Protection” tool that should allow musicians to personally approve or reject new releases before they are published.
Як нейромережі бачать вільну та незалежну Україну? Тест dev.ua
