Phishing links are being spread on the Internet under the guise of payments for power outages

Another fraudulent scheme targeting Ukrainians suffering from power outages has become active on social networks and popular messengers. Users are massively offered to apply for financial assistance for long power outages, but behind this is phishing to steal money from cards.

Cyberpolice warns of a new threat and manipulations by attackers. Experts urge users to ignore calls to register on third-party resources in order to receive compensation.

The scheme operates in a classic social engineering scenario. The victim sees a link in their social media feed or receives a personal message asking them to click on it to apply for a payout. The link takes them to a fake phishing site that may mimic the interface of a government agency or banking institution.

On such a web resource, the user is asked to enter confidential data:

  • login and password for entering Internet banking;

  • full payment card number, expiration date and CVV code;

  • PIN, phone number or date of birth.

«This is another fraudulent manipulation aimed at seizing the funds of gullible citizens,» the Cyber Police emphasize. As soon as a person enters this information, the attackers instantly gain full access to their bank account through their own devices and steal the money.

To protect yourself from phishing, experts advise not to click on suspicious links, to check any information about assistance exclusively on the official websites of government institutions or banks, and to never disclose your payment passwords, PIN codes, and card security codes to anyone.

In the spring of 2026, Ukrenergo had already warned about similar fakes on its behalf. At that time, scammers promised payments ranging from UAH 1,900 to UAH 5,100, allegedly in collaboration with Oschadbank, the Red Cross, or the UN.
