Fox has announced its acquisition of streaming platform Roku for $22 billion.
The deal, expected to close in the first half of 2027, will combine Fox's sports, news and entertainment content (including the Tubi service) with The Roku Channel, and will provide access to "the company's proprietary data and direct relationships with more than 100 million streaming households worldwide," Dexerto writes .
In a statement on June 15, Fox said it was "committed to continuing to develop Roku as an open, partner-friendly platform, and to ensuring the widespread distribution of FOX content."
According to the companies, together they will become "the third largest player in the US television market by viewership share, offering a compelling mix of FOX sports, news and entertainment content."
“In 2020, we acquired Tubi, and under our leadership, the service has become one of the most successful streaming businesses,” said Lachlan K. Murdoch, executive chairman and CEO of Fox Corporation. “Roku pioneered streaming television and scaled it into the leading CTV platform. Together, we intend to begin a new chapter in its history.”
According to the companies, the benefits of this deal will be increased scale and reach, expansion into high-growth market verticals, an improved long-term growth profile, and a “more powerful streaming platform” for users.
Although the deal is scheduled to close in the first half of 2027, it must first be approved by Fox and Roku shareholders and must also receive regulatory approval.
