FPV drone debuts in Formula 1 live broadcast at speeds over 350 km/h
A camera drone capable of accelerating to 300 km/h in 4 seconds and reaching a top speed of over 350 km/h was first used during an official Formula 1 live broadcast. The FPV drone was integrated into the broadcast system of the Austrian Grand Prix, where it chased cars on the track at racing speed.
This is reported by DroneXL. The signal from the drone was broadcast live, including for viewers of the American platform Apple TV, which is broadcasting the race this season.
The development and testing of this drone lasted at least two years. The main engineering challenge was to ensure stable operation of the device under extreme loads throughout the entire racing lap. At such speeds, the batteries and motors operate in a critical mode, which creates a high risk of overheating and equipment failure right in the air.
To get a clear picture without shaking, the developers used specialized cameras and an ultra-light aerodynamic body. The design of the device is designed to counteract the powerful air currents created by the cars on the track. At the Red Bull Ring, the drone descended low above the asphalt, capturing the fight between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen.
On social media, viewers noted the difficulty of the drone operator’s work, who controlled the device in manual mode.
Red Bull previouslyreported that for the first time in the world, a drone managed to reach speeds of over 300 km/h to keep up with a Formula 1 car driven by racer Max Verstappen for an entire lap.
