Ukrainian defense tech company Frontline has announced a collaboration with Estonian robotics manufacturer Milrem Robotics. They have successfully integrated the Burya grenade launcher turret into the THeMIS ground-based unmanned system.

The effectiveness of integrating the Burya turret with a 40 mm Mk-19 grenade launcher into the THeMIS complex was confirmed during test firing trials in Ukraine, according to a press release. The testing took place as part of an updated training program for instructors of automated turrets. The system demonstrated accurate targeting at a distance of over 1,100 meters.

«This successful demonstration confirms the reliability and accuracy of the integration of the Burya robotic turret and the THeMIS ground system. It also highlights the growing role of robotic platforms in improving tactical effectiveness and operator safety on the modern battlefield,» commented Paul Clayton, Director of Industrial Partnerships at Milrem Robotics.

According to Frontline CEO Yevhen Tretyak, this is an example of «the synergy of Ukrainian innovations and the European engineering school.»

«At Frontline, we believe that the future of warfare lies in robotic platforms. Storm is part of the concept of an autonomous frontline, where robots perform combat missions while humans save their lives,» he said.

A series of additional tests will be conducted in the coming weeks to combat-prove the system and verify its stability in various application scenarios. The next step is to integrate the system into existing mission planning scenarios, as well as adapt the solutions to specific battlefield tasks.

It is noted that THeMIS previously became the first unmanned ground-based complex in its class to be used by the Armed Forces of Ukraine to perform combat missions. The Burya grenade launcher turret has been in service with military units since January 2025 and is already being mass-produced.

Earlier it became known that THeMIS will be equipped with Starlink satellite communication, which will allow them to be controlled at the front from a conventional «office in Kyiv». The company noted that Starlink will receive a cargo version of THeMIS. For this, Milrem turned to the Dutch company AEC Skyline, which is engaged in data transmission.

Last month, it was reported that German drone company Quantum Systems had acquired a 10% stake in Frontline, with the option to increase it to 25% within a year. This is expected to help create «technological synergies» between the partners and integrate European components into robotic systems manufactured in Ukraine.
