How to earn $1 million a year writing custom resumes? The story of a freelancer who succeeded

American resume writer Richard Lambert earns over a million dollars a year. How did he achieve such success?

Richard Lambert is a resume writer who gets most of his work from Fiverr. He charges around $85 for a basic resume and has earned over $1 million annually since 2020. Here’s his story, as told by Business Insider.

Thirst for earnings

I grew up in a middle-class family in a small town. When my mom opened a savings account for me at the local bank, I loved watching my savings grow in my passbook.

I started asking very practical questions, like how much a front door costs. I was shocked at how expensive things were compared to what was in my savings account. It gave me a sense, even as a kid, that I needed to pull myself together and keep my nose in the wind.

My father didn’t really teach me much about finances, but he always taught me to just show up to work. And I did. I haven’t had a day off since 2016.

Earnings on resume

I started writing resumes on Fiverr back in 2014, charging about $45 each. Today, I charge about $85 for a basic resume and more for other services like cover letters. The harder I worked, the more the algorithm rewarded me, especially after I got over 25,000 five-star reviews. In 2022, I made $1.1 million writing resumes. Now, as I approach 40, I’m a multimillionaire with two mortgages paid off.

Even before I started making seven figures, the freelance platform Fiverr had an impact on my life. As much as I hate to say it, the pandemic has been very beneficial for my business. My net worth has only increased since then, but I still consider myself a small millionaire.

Millionaire without work life balance

Work-life balance simply doesn’t exist for me. I made a deal with the devil: I have a great income, but I have to work every day. I haven’t had a day off since 2016, even when I was in intensive care after that motorcycle accident. That’s the nature of this business. You have to be sensitive to your customers.

At the same time, I have some flexibility. I don’t have set hours, so I can pick up my daughter from school. I’m at every game or school play she goes to. But I’m constantly working after hours.

Willing to spend on family

I’m conservative about how I spend my money. I drive a 20-year-old Lexus. I bought it because I like its vintage appeal and because it gives me a little bit of pleasure.

I’m willing to spend money on some things, mostly on my family. My wife drives a brand new Volvo XC-90, and I like knowing that she and our daughter are safe. Last summer we bought a little house on a lake in my hometown. We took out a mortgage for a short time, but paid it off in three months.

I don’t show off, but I value the real connection with my small circle of friends and family. I love spending summers at the lake with my daughter, tubing, boating, and spending time together. Next summer we plan to buy a jet ski. I couldn’t afford to spend summers at the lake as a kid, and I’m glad I can give it to her. The memories we made there are priceless.
