GitHub Copilot now has a free version, integrated by default into Microsoft's VS Code editor. Users only need to have a GitHub account. Until now, most developers had to pay a monthly fee of $10, and free access was only available to verified students, teachers, and open source developers.

Free plan users can access Anthropic’s Claude 3.5 Sonnet and OpenAI’s GPT-4o. Paid plans also include Google’s Gemini 1.5 Pro and OpenAI’s o1-preview and -mini, TechCrunch reports . Access to the service can be activated at this link .

The free Copilot will work in VS Code, Visual Studio, and JetBrains editors, as well as on GitHub.com.
GitHub also said that 150 million developers are now working on its platform, compared to 100 million at the beginning of 2023.
