Google DeepMind will train artificial intelligence in the EVE Online game universe
The developers of the space MMORPG EVE Online have announced the start of a strategic partnership with Google DeepMind to study the behavior of artificial intelligence in complex dynamic systems. The project will focus on studying the interaction of AI with an environment driven by the actions of thousands of real players.
The developers of the space MMORPG EVE Online have announced the start of a strategic partnership with Google DeepMind to study the behavior of artificial intelligence in complex dynamic systems. The project will focus on studying the interaction of AI with an environment driven by the actions of thousands of real players.
The studio behind the space MMORPG EVE Online has announced the restoration of its independence and rebranding, now operating under the name Fenris Creations. The company is now owned by its shareholders and governed by its own Board of Directors. This structure will allow the studio to make far-reaching decisions about the development of the EVE universe.
EVE Online is a massive space simulation game that has been around for over two decades. The game is known for its highly complex, player-driven economy and large-scale political conflicts involving thousands of real people. Due to its high level of social interaction and realistic gameplay, the game is often referred to as a «second life» or a digital empire.
The studio is starting a new phase of independence with an ambitious scientific collaboration with Google DeepMind. For AI researchers, the EVE Online universe has become a priority platform due to its unique structure — it is essentially a simulation of a «living world» with its own economy, politics, and social ties, controlled by thousands of players.
«EVE is one of the few environments where questions of intelligence can be explored within something that already behaves like a living world. What the game community has created is truly unparalleled. It is a unique simulation for testing universal artificial intelligence in a safe, isolated environment,» emphasized Google DeepMind Director Alexander Mufarek.
The initial research will be conducted in controlled offline versions of the game, which will not be connected to the main Tranquility server. This will allow developers and researchers to experiment with algorithms without affecting the gameplay experience of regular users. However, in the long term, the developments may open up new possibilities for player interaction with systems within the EVE universe.
Google DeepMind has previously demonstrated success in gaming with projects like AlphaGo and AlphaStar, where AI defeated professional Go and StarCraft II players. The new partnership aims to go beyond simple gaming strategies and focus on studying intelligence over long timescales and complex social problems.
The developers will share more details about the research plan at Fanfest 2026 next week. The panel discussion will feature Adrian Bolton, a member of the founding team at Google DeepMind, who will present the project’s roadmap along with CCP Games CEO Hilmar Pétursson.
Як нейромережі бачать вільну та незалежну Україну? Тест dev.ua
