As Ars Technica reports, this feature resembles one of Google’s most interesting experiments, NotebookLM, which allows you to explore documents and notes using the Gemini artificial intelligence model.
Last year, Google added the ability to generate so-called audio reviews from documents in NotebookLM. Now, Google has added these AI podcasts to the browser’s search results. Instead of clicking on a link or reading an AI review, two AI hosts can tell you what the search algorithms found for a particular query.
Currently, this feature is only available in Search Labs, meaning it must be enabled manually. However, most users can join the test and try out AI podcasts in search. Once activated, the embedded player will appear in Google search results. It is not at the top with the usual block of AI-generated text, but after the first few search results, under the «People also ask» section.
«Looking for a topic you’re unfamiliar with? Audio Review helps you navigate, offering a convenient, hands-free way to get information, whether you’re multitasking or simply prefer an audio format,» the developers describe the feature.
Google doesn’t waste resources on automatically generating audio, so to get started, you need to click the «Generate» button. After a few seconds, the user will receive a dialogue between two artificial intelligence voices summarizing the search results. The player contains a list of sources on which the review was built, as well as the option to speed up or slow down playback.
