Google has started automatically rolling out AI Overviews in search. Why could sites lose even more conversions?
Google is testing a new look for AI Overviews in search. For some queries, the AI answer now automatically expands in full, without a Show more button, and an Ask anything field appears immediately below it for the next question. This pushes regular search results even lower down the page.

The change was noticed by SEO specialist Chris Long, after which Search Engine Roundtable managed to reproduce it.

Previously, Google search only showed part of the AI Overview, and to read the full answer, the user had to click Show more. Now, for some queries, Google immediately shows the expanded AI answer. Below it, there is also an Ask anything line, through which you can ask an additional question and continue the search in a conversational format. So, in order to see the usual links to sites, the user will have to scroll past the AI answer to get to them.
Google confirmed the testing. The company explained that AI Overviews can automatically expand for topics where the algorithms find it most useful. Also, if the user has already started scrolling down the page, Google will not expand the AI Overview so as not to suddenly move the content and knock it out of place.
For websites and media, this change can be significant. In August, researchers published the results of an experiment with 1,100 Google Search users. When AI Overviews and AI Mode were removed from search, users were more likely to click through to websites from search results.
And a Pew Research Center study based on data from 900 Americans showed that sources cited directly in AI Overviews accounted for only about 1% of clicks when viewing such AI responses.
Previously, dev.ua analyzed how AI Overviews are already affecting organic website traffic. SEO Team Lead Promodo Vladislav Trishkin noted that the changes affected information sites and media the most, because the user can get the answer directly in the search and not follow the link.
