According to Google, the number of cyberattacks worldwide increased by 44% in 2024, and almost half of small and medium-sized businesses in Europe have experienced a cyberattack in the past two years. However, Europe is short of 883,000 cybersecurity professionals.
That’s why Google.org’s Cybersecurity Workshops program launched in fall 2023, committing $15 million to expand access to cybersecurity education. Participating universities will provide thousands of students with hands-on experience through internships, mentoring from cybersecurity professionals, and hackathons.
Among the 20 universities participating in the program, there are two Ukrainian ones. These are Drohobych Ivan Franko State Pedagogical University and Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv.
The program aims to protect more than 3,500 local organizations in different countries from cyberattacks. Universities will also receive Titan security keys and free cybersecurity training.
«Similar to the Cybersecurity Clinics Fund in the US, these workshops are mutually beneficial — universities strengthen cybersecurity in their communities while training a new generation of professionals through hands-on work experience,» Google notes.
