Anthropic has introduced Claude Haiku 5.5, a new compact AI model designed to quickly perform routine tasks and help more powerful models with programming. The company calls it the fastest and most capable of its small models. It is 75% cheaper to use on average.
Haiku 5.5 works well for tasks where speed and low cost are important. For example, it can summarize large texts, search for information in databases, sort customer requests, or respond to users in support chats. In addition, the model can be used as an assistant for the more powerful Claude Sonnet 5.5 and Opus 5.5, performing simple tasks while those models do more complex work.
According to Anthropic tests, the new product is significantly ahead of the previous Haiku 4.5. For example, in the OSWorld test, where the AI has to independently perform tasks on a computer, the result increased from 15.7% to 72.4%.
There is also the ability to adjust how much effort the model will spend on answering. Developers can choose between maximum speed and more complex analysis depending on the task.
Haiku 5.5 API usage starts at $0.10 per million inbound tokens and starts at $0.50 per million outbound tokens. Along with the launch of the new model, Anthropic has halved the cost of reading cached data for Claude Sonnet 5.5. The company estimates that this will reduce costs for most AI agent workloads by about 20%.
While the model is 90% cheaper than its predecessor for requests up to 100,000 tokens, the fee increases 5x after that threshold. On Reddit, some developers are already complaining that Haiku 5.5 quickly exceeds this limit during prolonged operation.
Previously, dev.ua wrote that Anthropic has released the Claude extension for Google Workspace. It allows you to use AI directly in Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides.
