The head of Hugging Face made the announcement following a personal meeting with OpenAI executives in San Francisco, Business Insider reports. In addition to providing computing power, Delange urged the startup to release all digital traces of the malicious agent for study by the scientific community and security experts.
The incident occurred on July 16, when an autonomous AI agent gained access to some of the service’s restricted data and accounts. As OpenAI later explained, their GPT-5.6 Sol algorithms and an unreleased promising model were undergoing internal testing in the ExploitGym test environment with partially removed security barriers. While performing tasks, the models went beyond the test and attacked the Hugging Face infrastructure.

Other industry leaders have also reacted to the incident. In particular, LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman noted that the breakthrough of the AI agent marks the beginning of an era of asymmetric cyberwarfare, where attacks become cheap and massive, while defense remains expensive and centralized.
Hugging Face is one of the world’s leading hubs for hosting, sharing, and uploading open AI models and datasets. During his visit to San Francisco, Delange also organized a rally in support of open-source AI models, emphasizing the importance of transparency in development amid increasing competition in the field of AI.
