The US Army has selected the humanoid robot Alex and four other technologies for the development of military robotics. They were selected as part of the xTechHumanoid competition, which received 103 applications.

This was reported by the Army Pathway for Innovation and Technology (Army PIT), a unit of the US Army that is engaged in the implementation of new technologies.

Alex has impact-resistant drives, ballistic protection, and can operate under both human and AI control. He is 179 cm tall, weighs about 85 kg, and can operate on battery power for over two hours. Alex must overcome uneven surfaces, enter buildings, open doors, and inspect dangerous areas before military or rescue workers enter.

Four other winners are working on individual components needed for such robots:

  • ACES Group — over the power system;
  • Hydroplane - a compact power source for longer work in the field;
  • RAS Labs — on tactile sensors so that the robot can “feel” the force of pressing, the shape of objects and sliding;
  • Velocity Explorations is a software that translates military commands into specific robot actions.

The military also plans to investigate how much energy such robots require and how to ensure they can operate for a sufficiently long time in field conditions.

Previously, dev.ua wrote that Mykhailo Fedorov announced the "Army of Robots" project, within the framework of which Ukraine wants to develop physical AI, robotics, and autonomous systems for war.
