IBM has released a new AI mainframe that it has been working on for 5 years. The Z17 can process 450 billion output operations per day and is more energy efficient
IBM has unveiled its new z17 mainframe. The company says it is fully encrypted, powered by the IBM Telum II processor, and designed for more than 250 AI use cases, including AI agents and generative AI.
Mainframes may seem outdated, but today they are used by 71% of Fortune 500 companies. In addition, their market was estimated at $5.3 billion in 2024.

Tina Tarquinio, vice president of product management and design at IBM Z, told TechCrunch that the mainframe update has been in the works for five years — long before the current AI hype, which began with the release of OpenAI ChatGPT in November 2022.
The company spent over 2,000 hours of research and received feedback from over 100 customers while creating the z17. Tarquinio says it will be interesting to see if the buybacks it receives after 5 years align with where the market is ultimately headed.
The z17 can process 450 billion inferences per day, a 50% increase over its predecessor, the IBM z16, which was released in 2022 and ran on the company’s original Tellum processor. The system can fully integrate with other hardware, software, and open source tools, TechCrunch reports .
The new mainframe is configured to adapt and respond to the evolving trends in the AI market. It will support 48 IBM Spyre AI accelerator chips at launch, with plans to increase that number to 96 within 12 months.
Tarquinio said that one of the main features of the z17 is that it is more energy efficient than its predecessor and competitors.
“On the chip, we increase AI acceleration by seven and a half times, but this is five and a half times less energy than is required, for example, for multi-modeling on another type of accelerator or platform in the industry,” says Tarquinio.
The z17 mainframes will become generally available on June 8th.
