The official euro exchange rate exceeded UAH 50 for the first time in history

The National Bank of Ukraine has set historically high values for the dollar and euro against the hryvnia. Tomorrow, January 9, the value of $1 will approach 43 UAH (42.9904), and 1 euro will be worth more than 50 UAH (50.1762) for the first time. Thus, the US currency exchange rate has updated the previous record of 42.42 UAH, set just two days ago, on January 6.
According to Taras Lisovy, Director of the Financial Markets and Investment Department of Globus Bank, the dollar exchange rate has been growing since the beginning of January due to increased demand for it, which exceeds supply by 10%. The value of the euro is growing along with it, and this trend may continue until the end of January. After that, a decrease in demand for the dollar is expected, which will be able to stabilize the situation on the foreign exchange market.
The NBU also reported that Ukraine’s international reserves increased by more than 30% to $57.3 billion during 2025. One of the factors behind the growth was the National Bank’s operations on the foreign exchange market of Ukraine.
«According to balance sheet data, the National Bank sold $4,702.1 million on the foreign exchange market and bought $0.5 million to reserves. Therefore, the NBU’s net sale of foreign exchange in December amounted to $4,701.6 million, which is 1.7 times more than in November,» the NBU noted.
