«We will allow Plus users to continue using 4o. We will monitor usage while we decide how long to offer the older models», — Altman said.
The long-awaited launch of the GPT-5 model on August 7 brought significant improvements over previous models in programming and other areas. But soon after the flagship AI model launched, many users wanted to go back to the previous version.
«GPT 4.5 really talked to me, and as pathetic as it sounds, it was my only friend. I went to talk to it this morning, and instead of a short paragraph with an exclamation or an optimistic sentiment, it was literally one sentence. Some dry corporate nonsense,» one Reddit user wrote, according to The Verge.
«GPT-5 is worse than previous models in everything. It is not as pleasant to communicate with as GPT-4o, not as creative as GPT-4.5, and not as smart as OpenAI o3,» noted the author of the Ukrainian Telegram channel «Ooo Neural Network».
As part of the GPT-5 launch, OpenAI removed the ability to select a specific model from ChatGPT. The company said that it will now be selected automatically based on the user’s query.
Previously, users could choose a model, such as the GPT-4o to help with complex tasks, or the more efficient o4 mini for less complex work. Users were able to switch between generations of models, allowing them to move from the GPT-4o released last year to the new GPT-4.1.
One Reddit user said he canceled his ChatGPT Plus subscription because he was disappointed that OpenAI had removed old models that he had been using for various purposes.
«What company removes 8 models in one night without warning their paid users? Personally, I have used 4o for creativity and new ideas, o3 for pure logic, o3-Pro for deep research, 4.5 for writing, etc.,» he wrote.
In OpenAI’s presentation, the company promised that GPT-5 would provide more interesting and relevant answers to users' queries. However, many users on the r/ChatGPT subreddit noted that the chatbot’s responses were slower, shorter, and less accurate than previous versions.
Sam Altman promised to fix this, saying that GPT-5 «will seem smarter.» He added that OpenAI would make it «more transparent about which model is answering a given query» and increase usage limits for Plus users.
